International Research Workshop on “Climate Change and Health”

The research workshop on Climate change and health was held on 23 November 2015 at Hanoi School of Public Health (HSPH) . This International Research Workshop was co-organized under the collaboration of HSPH, Hanoi Medical University, Umea University ( Sweden), and Gadjah Mada University ( Malaysia) with the objective of sharing research experiences of other countries in the region on the relation between climate change and public health issues. Participating in the workshop were more than 30 experts from : Sweden, Indonesia, Representatives form HSPH, Hanoi Medical University, National Institute Of Hygiene And Epidemiology, National Institue of Occupational and Environmental Health, representatives of research institutes and experts from Vietnam.

Climate change affects factors of society and environment, health - fresh air, clean water source, sufficient food and secure shelter. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), climate change or global warming has caused more than 140.000 deaths in the world each year. It is also contributing to the increase of many fatal diseases such as: malnutrition, diarrhea, and dengue or other epidemics’ return. These diseases have caused the death of about 6 million people each year.

At the workshop on "Climate Change and Health", Experts  discussed and shared reports on the hottest topics of climate change and environmental health like: the correlation between malaria , dengue  and other infectious diseases to climate change; between rabies and climate’s elements; awareness and practices of  people living in the flooded areas of the Central Vietnam; forecast infectious diseases under the climate change scenarios; effects of air pollution to children’s respiratory problems; the potential impact of climate change to animal-infected diseases in Vietnam. The opportunities for cooperation in research and publishing about climate change and health were also under debate in the framework of the workshop.
