HANOI SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH STUDENT CONFIDENT AND EBULIENT IN VANCOUVER, CANADA

On 5th September 2013, 2 HSPH students were honored to have a chance to practice in the Fraser Health, Vancouver, Canada as the International Education Cooperation Program between the HSPH and Simon Fraser, Canada.

 Two excellent students of the university including Le Thi Thu and Tran Le Mai (6th Master’s class of Public Health) had passed hundreds candidates to get the internship in Canada. This was not only their chance but also the HSPH’s pride when excellent students were chosen to practice and work in prestigious international health institution.

The internship program lasted in 6 weeks from 5th September to 18th November 2013 in Vancouver. In the first 4 weeks, two students practiced and worked in the Fraser Health Authority.

In the working time here, Thu and Mai shared that they had received many enthusiastic and friendly help from the Health Department’s staff who always share information, provide working documents for them. Both students were given an opportunity to take part in common activities, meeting, and discussion in the Fraser Health Authority.

Finishing 4 working weeks, Thu and Mai confidently presented their working reports and received many positive feedback from Fraser Health’s staff.

The next two weeks in the internship program, Thu and Mai participated in 3 classes in Simon Fraser University: Global Health, Improving Health and Policy and social marketing (Knowledge translation) to experience the teaching and learning environment here. Both were impressed with high self-study and research abilities of students at Simon Fraser University. The “Guest speaker” teaching methods (inviting leading experts in a field to talk to the students have been applied so much here”. Guest speaker is a new teaching methods to help students have a more realistic look, and opportunities to learn experience, practical knowledge from leading experts; however Mai and Thu were not new and worried because they have approached this method frequently in the Bachelor program at the Hanoi School of Public Health.

This trip was really a wonderful experience for Le Thi Thu and Tran Le Mai. They not only had learned a lot of knowledge but also had practiced language and communication, presentation skills. Both of them insisted that apart from their own effort, they are confident to complete the internship in Canada because of solid and deep professional knowledge that HSPH’s teachers have provided.
